Alex Centre
(Insight into the business)

Brooklyn-based designer Alex Center has always gravitated towards brand identity having discovered a passion for them at a young age “I remember the distinct feeling I had when I put on a winter jacket with their [Tommy Hilfiger] logo – it made me feel like I had superpowers. It made me instantly more confident, like I was part of a specific tribe.”
Center worked as an in-house designer not only for start-up companies but for some of the most widely recognised and loved brands – including a decade’s experience at Coca-Cola as their leading designer. “Transitioning from a small to big company has taught me everything I know about branding and selling products,” he says. Just three years ago the designer left the Coca-Cola franchise to pursue the opening of his own design and branding studio CENTER. The main concept behind his brand is bringing a voice to entrepreneurs through design. Building a brand that people can identify with and want to be part of with a personality and purpose is fundamental for Center.
Named as one of the 200 Best Packaging Designers globally by Luerzers Archive in 2011, Center strives to build a web relationship with his clients and their consumers which I admire as a Graphic Designer, for me brand image is more than a logo and this is something I convey in my work. Center’s claim “I want to do work that the majority of people can interact with” echoes through his website home page with its scrolling interactive graphic immediately drawing the viewer in and creating a relationship with them and strengthening his own brand identity. -
Be a thought leader, not a craftsman.
-
Be the brand.
-
Don’t listen to the wizard.
-
Think like a politician.
-
Designers belong in the boardroom.
Aside from his impressive resume and volume of interesting and inventive graphic design works, I find equally important Center's insight into the industry; having worked at both small startup brands and huge world wide companies. If you have the time I would recommend taking a look at this webcast where Center talks about the 6 lessons he has learned from working as an in-house designer at both small and large scale companies.
